If you ever wondered why they are still people out there that refused to wear a face mask or practice social distancing, well now you’ve got the answer: They’re sociopaths! 😛
Recently, the State University of Londrina in Brazil conducted a research called “Compliance with containment measures to the COVID-19 pandemic over time: Do antisocial traits matter” which have yielded several interesting findings. A total of 1,500 adults were surveyed for 15 weeks from March 21 to June 29 for this study.
The research, which studies the correlation between personality traits with the compliance of Covid-19 measures have found that people that possess “antisocial traits” are less-likely to comply with the regulations of wearing a face mask and social distancing.
The disorder is also commonly called the“dyssocial personality, psychopathic personality and sociopathic personality.”
So what does “antisocial traits” means in this context? Well, according to the study, it is defined or associated with:
- Traits that are typically present in people diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder.
- The American Psychological Association (APA) defined it as “a chronic and pervasive disposition to disregard and violate right of others”.
Common behaviours for those who have antisocial personality disorder include:
- Repeatedly violating the law.
- Like to exploit others.
- Deceitful.
- Impulsive.
- Aggressive.
- Reckless disregard for safety of self and others.
- Irresponsible.
- Have a lack of guilt, remorse and empathy.
According to the study authors,
“These traits explain, at least partially, the reason why people continue not adhering to the containment measures even with the increasing numbers of cases and deaths,”
Furthermore, the study suggests that people with this personality type feel like they can flout Covid-19 preventive measures because they have low levels of empathy. Antisocial tendencies also makes them be less concerned about exposing themselves and others to risk.
So guys, don’t be a sociopath. Wear a mask and practice social distancing okay!
