Three men accused of assaulting a long-haired man at a bak kut teh shop in Kepong were charged in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court this morning (14 May).

The defendants, 49-year-old Wang Ronglun, 33-year-old Lai Kaibin, and 30-year-old Wan Kaihui (30) (all names transliterated), confirmed they understood the charges before Sessions Court Judge Norlida after the court interpreter read the charge sheets to them in Mandarin.

Pleas and allegations

Despite the charges, all three suspects pleaded not guilty. They are accused of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to a 48-year-old victim at approximately 2 AM on 7 May at a bak kut teh restaurant in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur.

The incident reportedly began after the victim glanced in their direction upon hearing a noise. The defendants were charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means, read together with Section 34 for common intention.

If convicted, they face a sentence of up to 20 years’ imprisonment, along with a fine or caning.

Bail arguments and court decision

The defence counsel representing all three men applied for bail, arguing that the defendants had cooperated fully by surrendering to the authorities. The lawyer also cited overcrowding at Sungai Buloh Prison as a reason for release.

Conversely, the public prosecutor argued against bail, citing the gravity of the offence, the potential risk of flight, and the possibility of the defendants reoffending.

After deliberating on the arguments from both sides, the Sessions Court denied bail for all three men. According to reports by China Press and Sin Chew, the case has been set for a mention on 15 June.

All of the accused arrived at the court this morning and kept their heads down to avoid the media.
