The elderly are often taken for granted in this day and age. There was a time when multiple generations of families used to reside in one home, but increasingly, our parents and grandparents are being sent off to nursing homes, where we assume they will be well taken care of. After all, these homes are paid good money.

A video that went viral yesterday evening (17th June) however is causing outrage among Malaysians. The video, shared by the now-deleted Facebook account of ‘Cik Pah Cik Ton’, shows an elderly lady in a nursing home in Seremban being harassed and abused by a young woman, presumably one of the staff.

In the original post, Cik Pah Cik Ton accused the staff of the home, who are in their 20s, of not only hitting the elderly in their care, but also accuses them of starving and isolating their charges. Additionally, they are also accused of making the elderly drink urine, forcing them to eat chilli, and making them take excessive amounts of sleeping pills.

Utusan reports that there have also reportedly been 16 deaths since 2017 at the nursing home, which is only allowed to house up to 16 occupants at a time. The home was first opened in 2016.

Nicole Tan Lee Koon, the chairperson of the Women and Welfare Affairs Committee of Negeri Sembilan, told the media yesterday that she had already visited the premises and investigations are currently underway. She also said that the owner of the premises has already lodged a police report against one of the caretakers employed at the nursing home.

This is truly awful and our senior citizens definitely do not deserve to be treated that way! Hopefully the investigation can bring the truth to light and action can be taken by the authorities to punish those guilty of such abuse.
