Looking after a child is not easy. There have been too many stories of parents and guardians turning away for less than a second to look back and find their child involved in an accident.

It is not an exaggeration to say that everything could be a hazard because children’s curiosity can lead to dangerous situations.

For example, a viral video showing two children playing on an unfenced ledge outside a window of a condominium in Taman Setapak, Kuala Lumpur has been circulating on social media since yesterday (October 25, 2022).

In the video, the children, aged two and four can be seen relaxing on the ledge. At one point, one of the children stood up then sat back down, alarming the neighbours recording the video.

The video also raised concerns among the public who feared for the children’s safety.

The parents were negligent

Following that, a report was made and the investigation found that the children’s parents were in the house at the time of the incident.

“They claimed to be unaware of the incident,” said Wangsa Maju District Police Chief Superintendent Ashari Abu Samah.

Hence, the police arrested the married couple on suspicion of negligence while looking after the children.

“A police report was made by police officers from the Sexual Crimes, Women and Children Investigation Division (D11) of the Kuala Lumpur Contingent Headquarters under Section 31(1)(a) of the Children Act (2001),” he said.

“The couple has been questioned and were allowed to go home while the investigating officer completes the investigation paper that is to be referred to the public prosecutor,” he explained.

It’s a crime

According to Ashari, if found guilty, the couple will be fined not more than RM20,000 or imprisoned for not more than 10 years or both.

At the same time, the police also advises parents not to leave children alone without supervision because such an act is an act of negligence under the Children’s Act.
