Penang Wins Prestigious ASEAN Clean Tourist City Award for 4th Consecutive Time!

The Penang City Council (MBPP) was bestowed with the prestigious ASEAN Clean Tourist City Award 2024 – 2026 at the 2024 ASEAN Tourism Awards held in Vientiane, Laos last week.

Furthermore, this is the 4th consecutive time that MBPP has won the award, with the city council also getting the international honour for the 2018 – 2020, 2020 – 2022, and 2022 – 2024 editions.

Initiated by ASEAN member countries as a form of appreciation for tourism actors in the region, the ASEAN Tourism Awards are reserved for cities achieving superior and quality tourist destinations.

Besides the ASEAN Clean Tourist City, there are also four other categories awarded at the 2024 ASEAN Tourism Awards. These include the ASEAN Sustainable Tourism Award, the ASEAN Green Hotel Award, the ASEAN MICE Venue Award (Exhibition Venue), and the ASEAN MICE Venue Award (Meeting Room Category).

MBPP councillor Ms Tan Soo Siang and Assistant Senior Environmental Health Officer Mr Taufik Junik represented MBPP at the ceremony which took place from 22 to 27 January in Laos.

In a statement, MBPP said that the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Award 2024- 2026 showcases Penang’s commitment to making the city a smart and green city. This is in line with the Penang State Government’s vision of Penang2023: A Family-Focused Green and Smart State that Inspires The Nation.

MBPP also asserted that the achievement was due to the collaboration between many stakeholders, including NGOs, associations, communities and the whole of Penangites with the same goal of making Penang’s cleanliness well-known in the eye of the world.
