The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have arrested 3 men in Perak for their alleged involvement in online gambling over the Qatar World Cup football matches. The suspects, aged between 20 and 50 were arrested in the Ipoh and Hilir Perak districts under Op Soga IX.

Previously, PDRM had also made 10 arrests in Johor Bahru for illegal Qatar World Cup gambling under the same operation, though those particular arrests only involved bookies.

For these 3 arrests in Perak, the state police chief Datuk Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri revealed that the police also seized 2 handphones and cash worth RM900.

In a statement today, Mohd Yusri asserted, “The betting activity is done through an application known as JOL that allows customers to place bets in the cyberspace.”

“The suspect only needs to make top up on the application by purchasing a smartphone credit top-up directly at the premises that provide the top-up.”

Currently, the case is being investigated under Section 6 (3) of the Betting Act 1953. If convicted, the individuals may face up to a RM200,000 fine and imprisonment of up to 5 years.
