The Federal Government through the Ministry of Economy launched the Central Database Hub (PADU) on 2 January 2023, touted as the most comprehensive database established by the Malaysian government to date.

A central database hub which contains individual and household profiles of citizens and permanent residents in our country, PADU essentially enables the government to have more accurate data analytics for policy formulation and data-driven decision-making, especially as we move towards a targeted subsidy policy.

In fact, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli previously told Malaysians to “not get upset” if they don’t get subsidies should they not register for PADU and update their information in the database.

Today, Rafizi took to his official X account to give an update regarding PADU, revealing that all government machinery is going on the ground to help citizens and permanent residents register for PADU. This is to minimise the risk of dropout in the implementation of targeted subsidy.

The Economy Minister further revealed that over 1 million people, including those under 18 years old have registered for PADU as of this morning.

While the number sounds big, it’s actually quite far from the registration target that the government has set, which is 29 million signups.

As reported by BERNAMA, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said that the government is targeting 29 million registrations before 31 March 2024.  As it stands, only approximately 3.45% of the targeted signups have been achieved.

Accordingly, Rafizi urges Malaysians to help their parents, family and even neighbours who are not tech-savvy to register for PADU. The Economy Minister asserted,

“Help your parents, family and neighbour that is not tech-savvy to register. If there are poor families near you, please help them register.”

“PADU registration has passed 1 million (including those under 18 years old) this morning. Continue this momentum as we transition into targeted subsidies.”
