When two people get married, it is not just a union between them. Both spouses’ families also need to get along with each other because marriage will see the spouses’ lives become more intertwined than ever.

However, is conversation needed to build a good relationship between in-laws?

In a viral TikTok video by Farah (@farahwaheeda92), a Malaysian lady can be seen playing with her baby granddaughter as her son, his wife and parents-in-law speak to each other in Japanese.

According to the video, it is believed that Farah’s younger brother had found himself a Japanese wife and they have a daughter together. His Japanese parents-in-law can be seen having a meal together in Farah’s home as they were visiting Farah’s family here in Malaysia.

“Mom, do you understand?,” Farah asked her mom as the in-laws and Farah’s brother chatted in Japanese.

Not a single word“, her mom responded before laughing and continuing to play with her granddaughter.

“Can only gape and stare”, Farah captioned her video, referring to her mom who could only nod and smile at her in-laws.

Malaysians are amused

In the comments, netizens were amused by the situation and laughed at the fact that there were no subtitles for Farah’s mom.

“They didn’t turn on the subtitles?”

Subsequently, Farah shared two more videos of the interactions between her mom and her Japanese in-laws.

In one video, Farah’s mom and her in-laws tried to have a conversation with each other with Farah’s brother as the free interpreter.

Although they could not say much, they were nodding and smiling cordially to each other, appreciating each other’s efforts to speak English.

This made netizens shower Farah’s mom with praise, saying that she handled the situation very well as she was not afraid to speak in English.

One netizen also likened the interaction to a diplomatic meeting due to Farah’s brother’s presence as an interpreter.

Tears of joy

Finally, before leaving, the whole family sat down together to hand over some souvenirs Farah’s mom had prepared for her in-laws.

They gifted the in-laws some Malaysian snacks, some traditional cloth, a futon, a couple of framed photos of the family and even some Maggi instant noodles!

The mother-in-law was so touched that she cried tears of joy and gave Farah’s mom a big hug.
