A 33-year-old man, who was caring for his girlfriend’s 3-year-old daughter, had accidentally stepped on her chest, which subsequently led to the girl’s death. He has since pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

According to a report by Sin Chew Daily, the incident happened when the man’s girlfriend had left her daughter in his care when she was hospitalised on 18 July, 2022. The man had taken the girl from his girlfriend’s home in Senai, Johor, back to his home in Kota Tinggi.

Then, at about 3:3am on 20 July, 2022, the man was awakened by the girl’s cries for milk. He left the dark room to make milk, and when he returned to the dark room with the milk, he accidentally stepped on the girl’s chest, causing her to breathe rapidly.

The man then turned on the lights in the room and noticed that there was something wrong with the girl. He attempted to provide her with first aid and took her to a hospital for emergency treatment.

Unfortunately, the girl passed away.

Guilt and remorse

Step 1

After the girl’s death was confirmed, the man turned himself in to the police and actively cooperated with investigations. Additionally, he deeply reflected on his mistakes and asked his girlfriend for forgiveness.

His lawyer asked the judge to take into consideration the man’s guilt, remorse and cooperation, and requested a lenient sentence.

The prosecutor, on the other hand, argued that this incident resulted in the loss of a precious life and hoped that the judge would consider a sentence of not less than 12 years.

The man ultimately received a 10-year jail sentence yesterday (30 October, 2025).
