A recent post has gone viral after a couple stopped at a Rest and Recreation (R&R) stop in Rawang to use the restroom.
The incident sparked concern among netizens after the husband helped his wheelchair-bound wife use the persons with disabilities (PWD) restroom, only to notice what appeared to be a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera installed just outside an opening above the restroom.

Malaysian couple shocked after spotting CCTV visible from R&R OKU toilet
According to the post, @gemoi151 acknowledged that the CCTV was not pointed directly at the restroom. However, he said it still made him uneasy about his wife’s privacy while she was using the facility.
Based on the photos he shared, the CCTV camera can clearly be seen mounted above the partition wall. As the restroom has an opening at the top, the CCTV camera is visible from inside the OKU restroom and can even be seen reflected in the mirror.
“Yes, the CCTV is pointed elsewhere. But when you’re inside the OKU restroom at the Rawang R&R, you can clearly see a camera mounted above the partition wall.”

Calls for gap above toilet wall to be sealed
The husband has since urged the R&R management to cover the open gap above the wall.
“When I helped my wife into the restroom, I immediately felt worried and uncomfortable. Even though the camera is facing outside, it still feels like there’s no real sense of privacy because the wall is open at the top,” he added.
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, the husband said he hopes action will be taken “for the greater good and to protect the privacy of public restroom users.”

Netizens’ reactions

“It’s simple. If we can see the CCTV, then the CCTV can see us too.”

“For your information, this type of camera can be controlled remotely to rotate (move internally). That’s a big red flag to me.”

“It just doesn’t make sense for the CCTV to be placed there. What’s even more concerning is that it’s facing the mirror’s reflection, and the mirror faces people using the restroom. Doesn’t that seem strange? The whole setup looks a little too strategically positioned.”

“Why is there a CCTV camera installed at the entrance to the restroom? Secondly, why wasn’t it installed facing away from the restroom? From where it’s positioned, the distance and angle mean the restroom area can still be captured on CCTV.”
