In Malaysia, a woman is entitled to 98 days of maternity leave and the husband can have a total of 7 days of paternity leave. As a married couple with a newborn, they truly deserve that.
Unfortunately, a Malaysian mother who recently gave birth did not have the luxury of using her maternity leave as long as she deserved to. In an anonymous post shared by the Facebook group theAsianparent Malaysia, the anonymous woman revealed that she received her retrenchment news from her employer via WhatsApp.
“My employer apologised for having to terminate my employment, on the excuse of no backup and my 2 months leave is too long.”
The Labour Deptment should know this
Of course, the news broke her heart and the woman said she would feel even sadder whenever she looks at her newborn and her husband. Fortunately, kind Malaysians in the comment section have guided the unfortunate lady on what she should do next.
“If you have PERKESO & KWSP, and if your employment is confirmed, lodge a report at the Labour Department and claim your losses.”
Another Malaysian even asked the unemployed woman to message him personally so that he could advise her on the necessary steps.
“Contact PERKESO, you’ll get to claim your losses. Do PM me as well, I’ll help as much as I can.”
“It’s wrong to terminate employees without a valid reason. There is an Act that protects all employees. Please report to the nearest Labour Department.”
In the meantime, a mother who had experienced the same in the past shared how she was also terminated due to her pregnancy.
“Waited for 4 months to be confirmed, only for them to discontinue me due to my pregnancy. Why would they even hire me in the first place? I worked from home prior to this job and I resigned from that job just to start employment in the company that terminated me.”
Fellow Malaysian women, have you ever encountered a similar experience in the past, or do you know anyone unfortunate who was retrenched during their maternity leaves?
