Many of us have been cooped up in our homes during MCO. Understandably, that would cause some of our electricity bills to rise more than usual. But 600%? That’s a stretch.

Recently, a man accused Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) for overcharging his electricity bill with a ridiculous 600% increase per month during the MCO. However, the electricity company clarified that these allegations were inaccurate.

“We have checked the bill and found there was a misunderstanding regarding the calculation of the bill. The amount of the consumer’s bills for April, May and June increased by 120 per cent per month,” said TNB Chief Corporate Officer, Datuk Wira Roslan Ab Rahman in a statement taken yesterday by Malay Mail and The Edge Markets.

The TNB official said he personally met with the consumer yesterday and explained how the prorated billing method was used to calculate his bill.

He then reiterated that “as a company regulated by the Energy Commission, we are subject to the terms of the licence granted including not calculating the bill arbitrarily.”

Roslan assured consumers that this prorate method was approved by the Energy Commission to protect consumers from being overcharged. He added that consumers affected by changes in billing during MCO should contact TNB for any clarification or use appropriate channels to obtain accurate information.

You can contact TNB through the contact details below:

  • TNB Careline: 1300 88 545
  • TNB’s Facebook account
  • Visit your nearest Tenaga Centre

Time to ask yourself if you really need to turn that air con on all day. Have you checked your MCO electricity bill?
