MCA Wants Barisan Nasional to be Dissolved & Form a New Coalition

During the Malaysian Chinese Association’s (MCA) first annual general meeting since GE14 on Sunday (2nd December), the party decided to push for the dissolution of Barisan Nasional (BN) and form a more effective coalition.

According to Free Malaysia Today, this resolution was passed by MCA’s central delegates in a closed-door referendum at around 6.18pm yesterday. Votes were taken by way of raising hands, and only one delegate voted against this.

Telling reporters at a press conference following the annual general assembly at Wisma MCA, the party’s president, Wee Ka Siong, was quoted by the daily as saying,

“We’ve heard the views of the delegates. Many are aged under 40. One by one, they have dissected the situation and given the rationale for the party to make a decision. There are those who called for future plans and those who called for calm and not to be emotional.”

“After taking into account the views of the young people and veterans, this resolution was passed. One disagreed. The rest raised their hands in agreement. We consider it an overwhelming consensus.”

“The party’s central committee has been authorised to pave way for the dissolution of BN and seek new political coalition partners. Now is not the time to point fingers. We appreciate the sharing of power between different ethnic groups that has been forged since independence,” he continued, according to the Malay Mail.

The dissolution of BN will be discussed among the three component parties, MCA, the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), and the United Malays National Organisation (Umno) to come to a consensus. Wee continued,

“As BN ruled for almost six decades, the coalition was met with an unprecedented loss in recent times and for the sake of rebuilding, BN needs to be dissolved.”

As for the possibility of BN’s central committee rejecting the move to dissolve the coalition, Wee merely stated that this issue will be addressed appropriately.
