Reports have emerged that 11 high-achieving students who scored 10 As in the SPM examination were excluded from the matriculation programme, despite earlier assurances of automatic admission.

Government leaders had previously promised that students obtaining 10 As would be granted direct entry into the programme without further selection. According to former Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong, authorities also announced within the last fortnight that a total of 6,717 students who achieved 10 As in the 2025 SPM would receive automatic offers.

Wee calls for the government to uphold its commitment

However, the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) Youth Secretariat has received 11 complaints from students who met the criteria but were not offered a place. The situation has raised concerns over the reliability of the so-called “automatic” system.

In his Facebook post, Wee questioned how such omissions could occur if the process is truly automated and designed to be error-free. There are also concerns that these reported cases may represent only a fraction of those affected, as other political parties have also been assisting students with appeal procedures.

Calls have since been made for the government to uphold its commitment and address any weaknesses or administrative lapses in the system. Critics argue that students who have met the stated requirements must be granted the placements they were promised.

Precedent for grading controversies

Wee also pointed out that this issue is not without precedent.

“Last year, controversy arose over whether the grade A- should count towards the 10A requirement. When I brought this up, I was criticised, with some accusing me of politicising the matriculation intake process,” he stated.

“Ultimately, the government maintained the original definition of 10A, which includes A+, A, and A-, and proceeded to allocate placements accordingly. As a result, 260 students successfully secured matriculation places through the appeal process.”

While the previous resolution was seen as a positive outcome, the recurrence of similar issues has renewed concerns regarding the system’s consistency and transparency.

Students accepted following successful appeals

In a recent update, Wee shared that MCA Youth assisted the 11 high-achieving students with their appeals, and all have now been accepted. He noted that an officer from Malaysia’s Ministry of Education confirmed their admission after reviewing their documents.

Additionally, 284 students who originally achieved eight or nine As had their results upgraded to 10 As following a recheck by the Malaysian Examinations Board, qualifying them for the matriculation programme. Overall, more than 300 students benefited from these revisions.

The statement concluded by thanking the Ministry’s matriculation division for its support and emphasising the importance of fair educational opportunities for outstanding students.
