A recent video clip went viral on social media yesterday (Dec 12) showing a staff at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) throwing around boxes of what appears to be zam zam water. These boxes belonged to pilgrims who had just come back from their pilgrimage to Mecca and netizens were shocked as the staff was handling the boxes really roughly.

The 12-second video clip has been circulating on social media and it was posted less than 24 hours ago. The caption accompanying the video alleges that the staff seemed to be tired and taking it out on the pieces of luggage that were going around on the conveyor belt.

The netizen wrote, “This happened today at KLIA. No matter how tired you are, you shouldn’t be showing your anger and frustration out by simply throwing the zam zam water belonging to the pilgrims on the floor. It was also done publicly in front of the pilgrims who owns the water. We don’t mean to punish the KLIA staff but it’s very clear that his actions have violated the SOP.”

After the video went viral, a Facebook user who appears to be a KLIA staff came forward to give an explanation on the incident. According to Sinar Harian, he said that they were forced to act fast as another flight’s luggage would be using the same conveyor belt.

They were afraid that the overload of luggage on the belt would cause it to be stuck or damage the zam zam bottles. He said that zam zam water should have been separated and placed at the Out of Gauge (OOG) cargo but they received information that the boxes had already been mixed with the regular luggage.

He explained, “We did not step over the zam zam water because that is haram. We just threw it on the floor so that we can ensure the conveyor belt moves smoothly. Throwing the zam zam boxes on the floor is not haram and the Al Quran also does not state that doing so is haram.”

In addition, he said after that when the conveyor belt was moving smoothly, the staff had taken the boxes of zam zam water and arranged them nicely by the side where they waited for their owners. He also urged others not to share the video anymore as it was damaging the reputation of the KLIA staff as they were just working hard to make ends meet.
