Merdeka and Malaysia Day have arrived, with our beloved country approaching its golden years with 65 YEARS of independence! Pretty impressive wei!

Instead of just watching the national parade on TV or being nonchalant about it (“More holiday!), why not celebrate Merdeka and the upcoming Malaysia Day for a change? The good news is, there are plenty of fun and easy ways you can do just that! Here are our two sens on how you can rejoice in our nation’s freedom this year!

1. Wear traditional outfits when going out to lepak!

In place of your usual attire, give your outfit a patriotic flair by dressing up in your respective cultural outfit! After all, Malaysia is one of the most racially diverse yet harmonious countries in the world, so we should show off how united we are, in spite of our differences.

2. Go on a “Malaysia truly Asia” holiday

Japan? UK? Why travel overseas when we have so many GORGEOUS holiday locales right here? Embark on a hiking trip at Sungai Lembing, try out a longhouse staycation in Borneo, or drive to Pangkor Island for a sunny beachside vacay – the options are limitless! Plus, you can support local tourism and our economy!

3. Try your hands at cooking/making your favourite Malaysian cuisines!

This would be a great time to ask any relatives who love cooking to teach you heritage dishes, or you can search for YouTube tutorials. We promise that it’ll be an eye-opening experience to discover how your favourite food is made and appreciate them even deeper – some are legit mafan to do wei, so mad respect to the aunties and uncles!

4. Learn about our Malaysian history by visiting historical sites around the country

If you dozed off during Sejarah classes in high school, not to worry – there are more interesting ways to learn about our nation’s heritage! Learn about the Malay Sultanate’s heritage at the Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum, and pay your respects to the departed prisoners of war at Sandakan Memorial Park – knowing more about our history and struggles will surely give us a new perspective on our country.

5. Check out a local bazaar that sells locally-made crafts

No matter which one you go to, our neighbourhood bazaars are always filled with interesting locally-produced things to shop for! From vintage clothing and accessories to handmade soaps and perfumes, it’s a great way to support local businesses and get to know like-minded people – it’s important to have the Malaysian spirit of sticking together!

If you’re not sure where to go for bazaar shopping, you can’t go wrong with Publika Shopping Gallery, since they’re known for hosting thematic bazaars offering an assortment of handmade crafts and more by local entrepreneurs that locals LOVE shopping for. ? In fact, they recently hosted a Merdeka-themed bazaar, Merdeka! Bazaar, featuring a wide variety of homegrown brands and awesome local goods.

So, be sure to check out Publika’s bazaars for some much-needed retail therapy AND support small local businesses at the same time!

“Pretty good ideas! How else can I celebrate wor?~”
