Physical assault is unfortunately not a rare occasion anymore, and it’s heartbreaking that many families are suffering from abusive parents, husbands or wives.
Recently, police have arrested a man for beating up his wife and child with a barbell during a heated argument at their house in Kg Tabanak, Sabah. Married for the seventh time in February, the 36-year-old jobless man was arrested at about 10.45pm on Wednesday (17 April), three days after the incident happened.
According to The Star, Nasri Mansor, Lahad Datu police chief Asst Comm said that the wife had attempted to run away from home on Sunday (14 April), resulting in her husband attacking her at about 6pm.
The 26-year-old victim decided to run away because she could no longer stand her husband’s abusive ways.
“In a fit of rage, the suspect punched her head and kicked her face until her mouth bled,” he said.
“He started hitting her with a barbell and threw weights at her. He did the same thing to his own child, the victim’s stepchild. The victims were bruised and swollen from the assault.”
About an hour later, the suspect lost his temper again and uttered many vulgarities at his wife and child. The victims then attempted to flee again and were successful. They then lodged a police report at the Lahad Datu police station.
“A team from the Criminal Investigation Department arrested the suspect at around 10.45pm and seized the weapons,” he explained.
Nasri added that the victim was a housewife while the suspect was unemployed. It was her second marriage and his seventh.
“He has hit her before, but she did not report it until now,” he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.
Let’s hope the wife and child will be able to find a new home and be free of the abusive man.
