A member of the state legislative assembly (ADUN) recently questioned the rationale behind standing up when the national anthem and the Malacca state anthem are played during the assembly meeting.

In a viral TikTok video, Sungai Udang assemblyman, Dr Mohd Aleef Yusof, questioned the need to sing Negaraku every Monday at 10 AM sharp, and dubbed the practice “unusual”.

“It takes place in the middle of the assembly meeting, prompting the debate to stop.”

“Suddenly, we have to stand up and sing Negaraku.”

Aleef was also heard yelling in the hall, saying that he was not wasting time, and the need to sing Negaraku in the middle of a meeting was unusual. After the completion of the national anthem and the Malacca state anthem, Aleef questioned,

“What just happened? Was it a mistake? Because this is unusual.”

The speaker of the Melaka State Legislative Assembly, Yang Berhormat Datuk Wira Ibrahim bin Durum, responded and explained that the practice was common in the Melaka state administration. He also pointed out that perhaps Aleef did not have experience in public service, which explained why the Sungai Udang assemblyman was probably unaware of the practice.

“Maybe Sungai Udang (Dr. Mohd Aleef) has never come in at 10 AM. This has always been the practice.”

Netizens were baffled by the outburst

Social media users were shocked and baffled to see a politician questioning the importance of the national anthem, with many pointing out that he should be replaced by someone else in the future.

“YB Sungai Udang is weird.”

“To the folks in Sungai Udang, for the next election, please choose a better representative.”

“This is an embarrassment to those who voted for him.”

“There you go! His secret is revealed; apparently, he has never attended the meeting early.”

Bukan amalan ‘unusual’ sebaliknya ia adalah kewajiban bagi setiap kakitangan kerajaan memainkan dua lagu iaitu Negaraku dan Melaka Maju Jaya pada jam 10 pagi setiap hari Isnin.
