There’s a Chinese saying, 活到老学到老 (Direct translation: Live until old, learn until old), which encourages people to never stop learning despite their age.
A PDRM officer took this opportunity and managed to obtain his Degree while still completing his duties as HR Minister, Steven Sim’s escort!
Steven Sim took to his Facebook page to share how his PDRM escort, Corporal Azhar, had gotten his Degree and they heartwarmingly held a small celebration for the officer at his Ministry (KESUMA).
He wrote, “Before this, he didn’t have the opportunity to attend university. Now, Azhar is a graduate. Corporal Azhar is my escort police officer. He has taken care of me since I was at MOF (Ministry of Finance). When I moved to KESUMA, Azhar told me that he wanted to continue his service in my team.”
He went on to explain that he always tries to let those working under him leave work early as he understands that they have their own lives.
And for Corporal Azhar, Steven shared that he would tell the officer to stay back at the office to study for his Degree.
“Despite being so busy with work, Corporal Azhar was determined to get a Degree. When he was younger, he didn’t have the opportunity to study at university due to financial constraints, but he never gave up,”
“Sometimes I would feel bad for him, I would tell him that if he needs time to study, I will allow him to just stay at the office. Even though he knows that I’ve given him that permission, he has never taken it. He has never run away from his duties. He has only asked for leave to go take his exams,” he said, adding that Corporal Azhar would still attend to his work after taking his exams.
Like a proud father
Due to Corporal Azhar’s achievement of completing his Degree, Steven decided to gift him a tailored suit and even held a small celebration at the HR Ministry for the officer.
“I feel very happy because finally, thanks to his own hard work, Azhar successfully graduated with a Bachelor’s in Public Management from UUM. We took the opportunity to celebrate Azhar’s success at the office,”
“Congratulations, Corporal Azhar, you are an inspiration to me and our team. Keep it going, who knows, there might be the opportunity for a Master’s Degree after this!”
