A 60-year-old e-hailing driver was recently assaulted by three intoxicated foreign men after reminding them to wear their seat belts during a ride, leaving him with multiple injuries.

The victim’s 26-year-old son, Kelvin, stated that his father had picked up the three men, who appeared to be drunk, and was transporting them to an area in Skudai when the incident occurred.

The elderly driver was defenceless against the attackers

According to Kelvin, his father had politely reminded the passengers to fasten their seat belts, but the request was ignored. The situation quickly escalated into a heated argument.

“One of the passengers began hurling vulgarities before resorting to violence,” he said.

Kelvin added that his father was completely unable to defend himself against the three younger men, who attacked him simultaneously. During the assault, the elderly driver accidentally knocked the gear lever, causing the vehicle to roll forward and crash into a drain before coming to a stop.

Fortunately, a delivery rider who happened to be passing by intervened to assist the driver. The rider also helped contact the police, prompting the three suspects to flee the scene.

Victim left were severe injuries

The victim suffered multiple facial injuries, including severe trauma to his eyes and ears. Kelvin also shared that his father, who has been working as an e-hailing driver for two years, vomited blood at the scene and was later rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Although he has since been discharged, his eyes remain swollen, and his vision is still blurred. Doctors are continuing to monitor him for potential internal injuries.

Police launch investigation

Kelvin noted that the police have been keeping the family updated on the investigation, though no major breakthroughs have been shared yet, as reported by China Press.

Family members later attempted to track down the suspects using the destination address listed in the e-hailing booking system, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

“If they were unhappy with the driver’s request, they could have cancelled the ride or asked to get out of the vehicle. There was no reason to beat a 60-year-old man so brutally,” Kelvin said.

“The police mentioned that CCTV footage from the area will need to be reviewed as part of the investigation.”

He urged the authorities to take firm action against the perpetrators and reminded fellow e-hailing drivers to exercise extra caution when transporting passengers who appear intoxicated, particularly during late-night hours.

Kelvin also encouraged all drivers to install dashboard cameras to ensure vital evidence is available in the event of disputes or emergencies.
