If you don’t already know by now, the prices of necessities such as food items are once again skyrocketing, leaving many B40 and M40 community members in a tricky situation.

In order to find out more about why the prices are increasing in such an alarming manner, Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh visited market vendors at Taman Bukit Maluri, Kuala Lumpur.

Taking to her Facebook page, she shared the various reasons for the price hikes, that she received from the vendors.

She wrote, “Yesterday, I walked around the Taman Bukit Maluri morning market to meet with vendors and to listen to their complaints. Rising costs of logistics, animal feed and labour have caused prices of almost all goods to rise.”

Here is the breakdown of just some of the increasing prices:

  • The rising cost of flour has affected the price of roti canai.
  • Logistics costs caused the prices of fruits, clothing and food to go up.
  • The rising cost of animal feed has led to high prices of chicken and pork. Bak Kut Teh sellers are heavily affected.
  • The high cost of vegetables are due to unresolved land problems by the government and the lack of commitment to help farmers improve crops.
  • The cost of plastic bags and milk also increased so the price of food and beverages have also increased.

But what makes the situation so much more depressing is the fact that many of the vendors, who have been in business for most of their lives, are ready to raise white flags.

“I am most saddened to hear of senior citizens who are about to give up after decades of business.”

“My team has collected data on past and present price comparisons experienced by traders and I will send a letter to the Federal Government to immediately take intervention measures. I am worried about children having no food after this because of the impact of rising prices of goods,” she added.

We genuinely hope that her efforts prove fruitful for it’s heartbreaking to know that people are about to lose their businesses and the underprivileged are going to struggle more just to feed their families.

Godspeed, Hannah, Godspeed.
