Remember not too long ago when it was reported that our ministers and high ranking officials would be receiving luxury Toyota Vellfires and executive Honda Accord sedans as their official cars? The news received plenty of backlash from the public, which is no surprise given how much both cars cost. The Toyota Vellfire usually retails for around RM300k, while the Honda Accord in its highest specification retails at RM168,998.

As it turns out, the government is making a U-turn on these reports, according to Free Malaysia Today as ministers and high ranking officials will still be using Proton Perdanas as their official cars. Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng had said that their supplier initially suggested the use of the Toyota Vellfire as an option for the official vehicle.

“We wanted to maintain the Proton Perdana but the supplier initially said they did not have enough for all the ministers and their deputies,”

But he adds that “We have just got confirmation that there are enough Proton Perdana cars, so we will be using them … there is no problem.”

The Cabinet committee has also awarded the contract to the yet-to-be revealed supplier, and the identity of the contractor will be identified soon to the public, according to Lim. For your information, the current generation Proton Perdana itself is also based on the previous generation Honda Accord, sold between 2007 to 2015.

Well, now that the government will be sticking to Proton Perdanas for the meantime, we suppose that’s one fiasco that we can leave in the dust!
