Apple launched its latest model, the iPhone 12, at approximately 1 pm today (14 October) and nobody has shut up about it since! While many are eagerly anticipating the day they can get their hands on one of these new models, there are a couple of important things you should know first! Here’s everything you need to know about the new iPhone 12 series:

1. The iPhone 12 comes in four different models

The latest iPhone comes in four different models:

  • iPhone 12 (6.1-inch screen)
  • iPhone 12 mini (5.4-inch screen)
  • iPhone 12 Pro (6.1-inch screen)
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max (6.7-inch screen)

2. All models are said to be 5G equipped

Apple promises that all iPhones under this series are 5G-enabled, which means optimal high-speed internet connectivity, especially when it comes to downloading and uploading content online. This would make the iPhone mini (5.4-inch screen), the smallest 5G enabling phone.

3. Doesn’t come with the EarPods or a power adapter

Unlike all its previous models, Apple’s latest iPhone 12 series will not be packaged with the EarPods or a power adapter. According to the Guardian, this is the company’s way of reducing their carbon footprint. However, the packaging will contain a USB-C to Lightning cable to support faster wireless charging.

4. Magnets at the back of the phone

The new iPhones are also equipped with a new MagSafe function which means it allows you to magnetically attach accessories to the back of your phone, including the new MagSafe wireless charging puck.

5. More durable

The latest iPhones also come with a sleek thinner design, equipped with a new Super Retina XDR display and a tougher screen material that Apple refers to as “Ceramic Shield”. This is said to make the glass more durable, as it now has four times better drop performance, say reports from CNN. They will also have a water resistance rating of IP68, which means they’ll be able to last in depths of 6 metres for half an hour.

6. Night mode and HDR video available for cameras

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini will come with two cameras each but unlike its prior models, the main lens now has seven elements that allow 27% more light to hit its sensors. They will also be equipped with a night mode feature for you to capture moments in the dark and a new Smart HDR 3 system which automatically adjusts things like white balance and contrast in photos to make them look more natural, says the Verge.

As for the iPhone 12 Pro, it’ll be equipped with all these new modes but with a LIDAR sensor that lets you take Night Mode portrait photos. You’ll also enjoy a 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom from the 52mm-equivalent telephoto lens.

7. New colours available
