The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) arrested a foreign woman at the Penang International Airport on Thursday (29 December 2022) after she cracked a joke about carrying a bomb in her bag to the airport staff at the check-in counter. The 33-year-old, who works as a factory operator in Ipoh Perak was nabbed by the police at 4.30pm before her scheduled flight to Medan, Indonesia.

As reported by Bernama, Barat Daya district police chief Supt Kamarul Rizal Jemal further elaborated that the woman and her two friends were scheduled to board the flight to the North Sumatran city at 5.30pm. She has since missed the flight and has been remanded for two days until today.

Supt Kamarul asserted,

“When the staff at the check-in counter inspected her bag, the woman said loudly ‘there is a bomb’, which was heard by the staff and other passengers nearby.”

The case is currently being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation. Well, let this be a lesson to all you travellers out there to not make such comments even in jest as such a matter is not a laughing matter, especially when it involves international travel.
