20-year-old Asahi Okazaki went missing in December 2024 in Japan after she was continuously stalked by her ex-boyfriend. Her remains were recently discovered.

Both used to live together until the breakup due to severe domestic violence, but the man continued to haunt her life until Asahi disappeared into thin air.

She was living with her grandmother before the disappearance, and according to her family members, Asahi made a total of nine phone calls to the police.

“He’s nearby, I might get killed”

After the breakup, Asahi was stalked at her place and her workplace. Her family members said the phone calls to the police started in November 2024 after the stalking got worse and interfered with her daily life. She last texted her mum, saying that “she might get killed”.

She was last seen on December 20 at 7 am, and her grandmother noticed the window in the other room was broken. A police report was lodged after that.

Shirai Hideyuki, Asahi’s ex-boyfriend, was investigated for stalking the woman, and it led to the discovery of Asahi’s decomposed body at a house in Kawasaki on April 30, reported NHK News.

The police estimated that Asahi had been murdered for at least one month, and the body was severely decomposed to the extent that some bones were visible.

Shirai was arrested at the airport on May 3 (Saturday), where he had just returned from the United States. He was arrested and detained on suspicion of abandoning a corpse.

Asahi’s body was stored inside a luggage bag which was hidden in a storage cabinet under the floor. According to Kyoto News, the body was initially unidentified, but based on the autopsy reports, the Japanese police confirmed that the body was Asahi.

Due to the severity of the decomposition, police are unable to identify the cause of death at the time being. Burnt marks were also found on her body, but the authorities are still investigating if Asahi was burnt before or after her death.

Asahi met Shirai at a bar where she used to work, and Shirai frequented the bar. Both started dating last year, but Shirai got violent, which caused the relationship to be unstable before the ultimate breakup.
