Astro is currently under fire on social media for allegedly racial profiling their customers. Apparently, there are segregated payment rules for ethnic Indian and foreign subscribers.
So what actually happened?
Well, it all started when a netizen named Madhavi posted on Facebook her unpleasant experience when attempting to apply for Astro.
To sum it up, Madhavi stated that her application for Astro was rejected because she refused the auto-debit payment procedure. An apparently she can ONLY pay through this method because she is “an Indian”.
Many users were understandably furious on Madhavi’s behalf.
However, there are several users in the comments section expressed that the policy was a result of some ethnic Indian subscribers who had defaulted on their payments.
Even if it was true, what does that have to do with Madhavi’s situation? As Michael Buckley once said, “You can’t judge the many by the actions of the few.”
So what happened next?
Due to the social media uproar, Astro released an apology. Well technically; its a “non-apology” apology. Take a look at it below.
Hence, despite being sincerely sorry about what happened, Astro firmly denies racial profiling through imposing compulsory auto-debit payment for Indians and foreigners. I mean, such a big company, I’m pretty sure they can’t be segregating all the races and make it harder on their part.
Astro also assured their customers that the campaign offer applies to ALL, with no discrimination to any ethnicity.
“We take this matter seriously and are investigating what actually transpired in Ms Madhavi’s case to ensure incidences such as these will not repeat.”
“Again, our sincerest apologies to all. Thank you.”
Good to know that customer service is taking action!
