Sometimes, new moms have more milk than their baby can drink and it’ll be a waste to throw it away, so they freeze their milk. However, you can also donate this breast milk, which is what a woman from India, Srividya K did.

In fact, she donated so much of her breast milk that she set a record in the India Book of Records! Srividya reportedly donated 105 litres and 980 millilitres of her breasts milk from April to October 2022, 5 days after giving birth to her 2nd child.

Hailing from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, Srividya donated her breast milk to the Human Milk Bank, Special Newborn Care Unit, Coimbatore Medical College Hospital through Amirtham Foundation.

The breast milk received there are usually distributed to infants with low birth weight and Srividya’s breast milk has been used to feed at least 2,500 babies.

To help children in need

According to News18, Srividya wanted to donate her breast milk to help newborns whose mothers have either died or are unable to care for them.

“Many kids struggle because they don’t get enough breast milk. This is especially true for newborns delivered every day at the government hospitals. Some kids are confined to incubators as they are underweight and I wanted to help“, said Srividya when asked about her decision.

In her quest to help these babies, Srividya’s husband Bhairav has been very supportive and helpful. He helped her look up information regarding breast milk donation and was with her though the whole process.

With the assistance of obstetricians, the 27-year-old began donating breast milk to the Amirtham Breast Milk Donation camp – an NGO in the nearby Tirupur district.

Then she started gathering her breast milk and preserved it according to the advice of NGO’s instructors, who subsequently gave it to the breast milk bank in Coimbatore.

She also urged more women from this generation to come forward and volunteer to donate breast milk to help save lives.

Such a great idea! Maybe some of you new mamas can consider this if your breast milk just won’t stop flowing!
