A Malaysian hotel receptionist, @syafqaheyka, recently shared a stressful front-desk encounter involving an international guest who attempted to check in before exchanging their money into Malaysian Ringgit.
In a Threads post, she said the situation became tense after the guest handed their phone to an acquaintance, who allegedly pressured her to make an exception to the hotel’s payment policy.

The clash over hotel payment SOPs
According to the receptionist, the guest from India arrived to check in but had yet to exchange their currency into Malaysian Ringgit.
She explained that payment had to be made upfront in accordance with the hotel’s policy, especially after previous experiences involving delayed payments had resulted in unpaid bills.
However, the situation escalated when the guest handed their phone to an acquaintance who worked in the same area. The woman allegedly questioned the receptionist and insisted that the guest be allowed to check in first and settle the payment the following day after exchanging their money.
The receptionist said she tried to explain that she was merely an employee who had to follow her employer’s rules and could not make an unauthorised exception. Despite this, she claimed the woman continued pressuring her to let the guests check in without payment.
“She kept pressuring me, saying, ‘I work in the hotel area, I’m not going to run away, I’m not trying to scam anyone.’ But this isn’t about whether they’re going to run away or scam us. It’s hotel procedure, and I’m just an employee,” the receptionist wrote.

eceptionist says front-line staff should not take customer anger personally
Eventually, the receptionist asked the woman to call back after the guests had sorted out their payment, as she had other guests waiting at the counter.
The guests ultimately left to look for cash. The receptionist later reminded travellers to prepare some Malaysian currency beforehand if they already know they will be checking in, to avoid similar complications.
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ about the incident, the receptionist admitted that she felt stressed by the repeated pressure despite simply following the hotel’s standard operating procedures (SOPs).
However, she said front-line staff in the hospitality industry should remain calm, follow the established SOPs and avoid taking customers’ anger personally.
After all, she said, staff are simply trying to do their jobs properly while following the rules set by their employers.
