A baby pygmy elephant was killed in the early morning of Saturday (26 November 2022) in Sabah after it was hit by a Perodua Viva. The incident happened on the Lahad Datu-Sandakan road at around 2.16am yesterday, with the baby elephant pronounced dead at the scene.

As reported by FMT/Bernama, the baby elephant was crossing the street when it was run over by the Perodua Viva. Lahad Datu wildlife officer Sylvester Saimin said that the driver escaped unhurt but his vehicle was damaged after he could not avoid hitting the animal as it suddenly crossed the road.

Sylvester Saimin asserted,

“The driver of the vehicle involved is believed to have escaped unhurt but the vehicle he was driving was damaged in the front… The Lahad Datu Wildlife Department then conducted a post-mortem examination before burying the carcass,”

The pygmy elephant or Borneo elephant is native to the island of Borneo and is a subspecies of the Asian elephant. Moreover, the animal is also protected under Malaysian wildlife conservation law.
