With the next General Election coming up, politicians on both sides have made their predictions on what they think will happen. However, with the introduction of Undi18, things might not be so black and white as the youths now have an important role in the next election.

Although it seems that our youths are extremely excited to vote in the next General Election, a study has found that 4 out of 10 are still on the fence on who to vote for.

According to a study conducted by Architects of Diversity Malaysia, Undi18 and UndiNegaraku, called the Youth Aspiration Manifesto Survey, 41% of the youth have not made up their minds on which political party to vote for.

However, it found that 80% of young Malaysians are eager to cast their votes during the upcoming election.

The survey, that was participated in by 3,089 respondents aged between 18 and 30, indicated that the youth would shape the country’s electoral direction as 55% of the aspiring voters are first-time voters.

Meanwhile, the survey found that Barisan Nasional (BN) is currently enjoying a relatively strong support among youths in the country with 15.5% of respondents saying that they would vote for BN in the 15th general election.

On the other hand, 13.8% would vote for Perikatan Nasional, 11.9% for the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) and 10.5% for Pakatan Harapan.

Representation in politics

The survey also asked the respondents to share their thoughts on representation in the political landscape.

The majority of the respondents pointed out the scarce representation of women and youth in the country’s political landscape.

At least 50% of them felt that there were very few women representatives in politics, while 63% believe that the country’s politics lacked youth representatives.

Meanwhile, the respondents were also divided on their views about the representation of minority races in politics, as 34% felt that there were enough representations, while another 33% argued that minority races had very few representatives.
