The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) arrested a 37-year-old local man after he was suspected of throwing his 5-year-old niece into a river in Johor, resulting in her death.
According to Kota Tinggi District Police Chief Superintendent Yusof Othman, police received a report on 21 September after the suspect allegedly went on a rampage, armed with a machete, and chased the victim’s 40-year-old father before throwing the girl into a river.

Yusof Othman revealed that the incident took place in Kampung Padang, Tanjung Sedili, Kota Tinggi, Johor.
A struggle broke out during the arrest, leaving one police officer injured. However, the suspect was successfully apprehended.

A medical assistant who arrived at the scene later confirmed the girl’s death. Her body will be taken to Kota Tinggi Hospital before being transferred to the Forensic Department at Pasir Gudang Hospital today (22 September) for a post-mortem examination.
“The cause of the incident is still under investigation, and the suspect is also believed to have mental health issues.
“The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years upon conviction,” the statement read.
Suspect was believed to be of unsound mind
Following the incident, Sedili assemblyman Muszaidi Makmor said in a Facebook post that the suspect was believed to have been of unsound mind and had acted unexpectedly.
Muszaidi, who visited the victim’s father at the Tanjung Sedili Health Clinic this afternoon, also expressed his condolences to the family and hoped they would be given the strength to get through the difficult time.
“May this family be given the strength to endure this very difficult ordeal,” he said.
