A 41-year-old woman was sentenced to one month in prison after pleading guilty to neglecting her 2 sons, one of whom is a 14-month-old baby, by leaving them unsupervised.
Bernama reported that the police received a call from a man reporting that a 6-year-old boy and his younger sibling were locked inside a house, and the accused had reportedly not returned home for 2 days.
She said she wasn’t home because of work
The woman, who works as a masseuse, explained that she was not at home because she was working in Pudu.
Investigations revealed that the woman had been negligent by leaving her home and abandoning her 2 children, which led to the fire department having to break down the door to rescue them.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Hairuliqram Hairuddin requested an appropriate punishment as a lesson for the accused.
“A punishment that serves as a lesson can raise public awareness about not leaving children unsupervised. The safety and well-being of children are the responsibility of their parents,” he added.
The woman pleaded for a lighter sentence
However, the accused, who was not represented by a lawyer, pleaded for a lighter sentence, citing her responsibility to support her family.
The accused was charged with committing the offence at an apartment in Ampang at 7:27 PM on October 7, under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, a RM50,000 fine, or both.
Judge Norshila Kamaruddin ordered the masseuse to serve her sentence starting from the date of her arrest, October 9.
