Bird’s nest is one of the most popular souvenirs tourists buy for their friends and family back home, and it’s especially popular among Chinese tourists. However, after seeing this, you might want to skip purchasing this item when visiting Thailand.

That’s because bird’s nest imitation has been spotted in Thailand and the ingredients they use are absolutely gruesome. According to Guang Ming, gum trees were imported and mixed with coconut tree skin to produce the fake bird’s nest. Eww…

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) had earlier received complaints saying that some restaurants in Pattaya sold fake bird’s nest with Chinese tourists being their main target. The authorities then sent three undercover enforcers to visit the restaurants who pretended to be buyers.

Moreover, it was discovered that the fake bird’s nest were only being sold between 40,000 baht and 50,000 baht (approx. RM5,166 to RM6,458) per kilogram while the authentic bird’s nest would usually cost anywhere around 150,000 baht (approx. RM19,375) per kilogram.

The covert investigation that started last year also revealed that these restaurants were charging each customer 3,000 baht (RM387) for the fake bird’s nest. Some tour guides would even recommend their tourists to visit the restaurant in order to earn a recommendation fee of 2,600 baht (RM336).

The authorities have since identified four restaurants that were illegally selling fake bird’s nest, and they’re currently investigating another five restaurants. Tourists especially from China were then advised to buy bird’s nest or supplements from verified sellers, and not to be attracted by the vast price difference.

Although it’s uncertain what the consequences are if you consume fake bird’s nest, we’re pretty sure it won’t be any good, right? So spread the word and stay safe guys!
