As Malaysia marked its 69th Independence Day with lively celebrations nationwide and reflected on the spirit of Malaysia Day, students from Sunway International Schools (SIS) welcomed residents of Sunway Sanctuary, a senior living residence, to its Kuala Lumpur campus for an afternoon of laughter, bonding, and meaningful intergenerational connection.

When Merdeka brought two generations together

Beyond national pride, the spirit of Merdeka lies in the bonds that bring people together. This heartwarming initiative reinforced a sense of community and belonging while leveraging the strength of the wider Sunway ecosystem.
Principal of SIS, Mr Richard Cherry, shared, “With the rapid advancements taking place around us, it is crucial that we equip our students with more than just knowledge. Equally important are the morals, values and human connections that help shape them into compassionate and responsible individuals.”
Learning goes beyond the classroom

“Being part of a vibrant and integrated community such as Sunway gives us the opportunity to create meaningful connections beyond the classroom. We look forward to playing a role in supporting and enhancing community engagement, while providing our students with valuable learning experiences that extend beyond academic achievement,” he continued.

Paired with SIS students, Sunway Sanctuary residents participated in a series of engaging activities designed to encourage meaningful interaction while supporting the motor and cognitive development of all participants.
An afternoon of stories, laughter and new friendships

The session concluded with heartfelt conversations between the two generations, as the seniors shared their life experiences and words of wisdom with the students before walking away with unexpected new friendships.

Uniting generations under one roof proved that connection, compassion, and community remain values that transcend age, while reflecting the Malaysia we continue to build — one where generations come together, learn from one another, and find strength in their shared sense of belonging.
