Merdeka Day and the days leading up to the celebrations are normally ones of appreciation and happiness. But this year, it feels different, doesn’t it?

There’s a lack of spirit in the air, and it could be due to the immense struggles Malaysians have had to endure over the past year. From intense price hikes to closures of local businesses, it feels like we’ve regressed more than we’ve progressed.

Hence, we can’t blame Malaysians for not feeling very cheerful at an event, and in this case, two hosts can be seen trying to get the crowd to applaud our Prime Minister (PM), Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob. The 我们是马来西亚人 We are Malaysians Facebook page took to their profile to showcase a video from the event.

In the video, a large crowd could be seen gathered in front of a stage at the event.

The male host on stage called out, “Malaysia sayang PM (Malaysia loves the PM)“, in hopes that the crowd would repeat after him and applaud in response.

But, not only did the crowd not repeat the cheer, they also made noises of disapproval.

Then, the female host made another attempt, “Kami semua sayang PM (We all love the PM)!“, but they still did not get the response they wanted from the crowd.

In fact, some audience members could even be heard boo-ing and laughing.

Considering the year that we’ve had, and the many mishaps by those in power, the people’s lack of enthusiasm seem somewhat justified.
