UKM & Sunway University Claim Top Spots as M’sian Public & Private Universities Dominate ASEAN Rankings

The latest public and private university rankings in the ASEAN region by prominent higher education ranking and rating agency AppliedHE see Malaysian institutions of higher learning dominate the top 10 lists of both categories.

For the AppliedHE Public University Ranking: ASEAN, 4 Malaysian public universities made it into the list, more than any other nation.

Furthermore, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) claimed the top spot in the ranking with a score of 75.94 ahead of the National University of Singapore which placed second with a 73.73 score.

The other 3 Malaysian public universities in the top 10 rankings were Universiti Putra Malaysia which placed 6th, Universiti Malaya (7th) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (10th).

Meanwhile, for the AppliedHE Private University Ranking: ASEAN, Malaysia’s Sunway University claimed the top spot with a score of 72.42.

Moreover, Malaysian private universities dominated the rankings, with 6 out of the top 10 being all institutes of higher learning from our country.

These include UCS University in 3rd, Taylor’s University (4th), Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur (5th), Asia Metropolitan University (7th) and Universiti Teknologi Petronas (8th).

Here are the top 10 universities in the AppliedHE Private University Ranking: ASEAN:

According to AppliedHE, both of the above rankings are the first to rank only private or public universities in the ASEAN region. Furthermore, they highlight the quality of teaching and learning, research, community engagement, internationalisation and institutional reputation.

A total of 160 universities from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam participated in the first (2024) edition of the rankings, 80 being public universities and the other 80 private universities.
