On 5 September, a two-year-old girl was seriously injured after being attacked by a pack of stray dogs outside her grandmother’s house in Kampung Tambak, Sungai Kelambu, Peserai.

According to a previous report by Harian Metro, Nur Haira had been staying at her grandmother’s home for the first time after her parents dropped her off before heading to Johor for work.

Nur Haira left seriously injured after being attacked by stray dogs

According to her grandmother, Darlinda, she had just gotten out of the shower when she noticed that the front door was open. She went outside to look for Nur Haira and was shocked to see five dogs attacking her.

Darlinda and her son immediately rushed Nur Haira to Hospital Sultanah Nora Ismail (HSNI), where she was treated in the red zone and placed in an induced coma. She was later transferred to Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA) in Johor Bahru due to the extent of her injuries.

Darlinda also claimed that the stray dogs had been abandoned by hunters who used them to hunt wild boar at a nearby oil palm plantation before leaving them there after they were done hunting.

In a recent update by Kosmo!, a family member confirmed that Nur Haira’s surgery went smoothly and that her condition is being closely monitored and remains stable.

Malaysian Animal Association calls on stray dog advocates to come forward

Following the incident, the Malaysian Animal Association has called on stray dog advocates to come forward and hold a press conference in defence of the aggressive stray dogs, after some claimed that the dogs involved belonged to them.

The association also criticised those who blamed the two-year-old girl for allegedly provoking the five dogs, as well as her parents for allowing her to play outside their home.

In its statement, the association claimed that these advocates had also demanded 10 to 20 acres of land and RM10 million from the government to house stray dogs.

The association stressed that the safety of Malaysians should come first, emphasising that everyone has the right to feel safe in their own homes.

“The safety of 32 million Malaysians must be prioritised over the feelings of 300 hardcore advocates of aggressive stray dogs. All 32 million Malaysians have the right to feel safe moving freely in their own homes and anywhere in the country without having to fear attacks from aggressive stray dogs.

“Ignore those who advocate for aggressive stray dogs and claim that there is no responsibility or accountability. They do not represent the views of Malaysians as a whole,” the statement concluded.
