The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an urgent notice to Malaysians who are residing or travelling to the United Kingdom to stay away from the anti-immigrant protests currently happening throughout the country, which has been dubbed the worst riot in the United Kingdom in 13 years.

In a statement, the Ministry said that it is closely monitoring the series of protests through the High Commission of Malaysia in London, which was triggered by a stabbing incident in Southport on 29 July.

Furthermore, the Ministry strongly encourages Malaysians who have yet to register with the High Commission of Malaysia in London to do so immediately to ensure they receive timely information and assistance.

Accordingly, Malaysians who require consular assistance can contact the High Commission through the channels below:

  • Address: High Commission of Malaysia in London, 45 – 46 Belgrave Square, London, United Kingdom
  • Phone number: +44 20 3931 6196, +44 20 7235 8033

The anti-immigrant protests in the United Kingdom were triggered by misinformation by the far-right

As reported by CNA, the riots started when 3 girls died and 10 other people were injured on 29 July, among whom 5 children and 2 adults are in critical condition, after a stabbing attack in Southport by 17-year-old suspect Axel Rudakubana from Cardiff, Wales.

However, according to Al-Jazeera, the far-right in the United Kingdom hijacked the attack and turned it into anti-immigration protests by spreading misinformation that the suspect was a Muslim immigrant.

The riots have since spread throughout the United Kingdom, with clashes between the police and several rallies causing damages and injuries.

We truly hope that all Malaysians in the United Kingdom remain safe from the ongoing protests!
