Recently, a heartwarming story shared by a Malaysian netizen named Chin Jenny has taken social media by storm, capturing the hearts of thousands online as she celebrated a remarkable 39-year friendship that defies race, religion, and the passage of time.
Taking to Threads, Jenny shared a deeply nostalgic look back at her lifelong bond with her best friend, Hasliza, whom she first met back in 1987 when they were just primary school students at SK Jalan Pasar 2. Despite facing an initial language barrier, the two young girls instantly clicked, sparking a friendship that would weather decades of life changes.
Childhood memories and hiding from dental checkups
Recalling their early days growing up together, Jenny shared a treasure trove of adorable and relatable childhood memories. From riding the same school bus and inventing secret code words during Form 3, their bond only grew stronger.
Recounting some of their most unforgettable moments as young girls, Jenny shared:
“In Primary 3, we hid in the school toilet to escape dental checkups, giggling behind locked doors until recess, because that’s when the school clinic closed for the day. In Primary 6, she lent me her baju kurung. I loved it so much, I kept wearing baju kurung proudly throughout my high school years. We rode the same school bus. We had a secret girl group in Form 3. We even invented our own code words no one else could understand.”
Among the most amusing anecdotes was when they spooked themselves silly believing there was a ‘dead body’ hidden in the storeroom beneath the classroom stairs.
Hasliza lovingly calmed Jenny down by teaching her to recite Bismillah. It was a moment of childhood fear that transformed into a cherished core memory that Jenny still smiles at, and remembers how to recite, to this very day.
Reuniting after decades apart
Like many school friendships, life eventually took the two friends down separate paths after Form 3. Their paths crossed only briefly in 2006 during a somber moment at Jenny’s father’s funeral.
However, fate finally brought them back together in 2024, leading to a joyful reunion over chocolate drinks. Despite nearly 30 years of life having passed, the duo spent three hours in non-stop conversation, seamlessly picking up right where they left off.
Reflecting on their incredible journey, Jenny noted that having a best friend from a different culture and faith has been one of life’s greatest blessings.
“It taught me empathy, respect, and how beautiful diversity can be, long before I even knew the meaning of those words. In a world that often sees differences as walls, we are living proof that friendship crosses every boundary.
“From 1987 until now, that bond has never faded. My childhood wouldn’t have been the same without her, and neither would I. I will always treasure this friendship built on laughter, love, and the kind of connection that sees hearts, not differences,” Jenny wrote.
