A freak injury in Phetchabun province, Thailand, caught the attention of netizens in the country recently, whereby a 2 cm-long fishbone visibly pierced through the neck of a 45-year-old woman after it got stuck in her throat for 2 weeks.

Images of the fishbone piercing through the flesh of the woman’s neck have gone viral in the country, including in this Facebook post with over 14,000 reactions and 1,100 shares.

As reported by the Thai-based publication Bangkok Post, the woman’s husband, 43-year-old Suriyan Bubpha-art, shared details of the unusual injury on social media.

Suriyan revealed that his wife had eaten a bowl of fish soup but was unaware that it contained sharp bones. As soon as she swallowed a spoonful of the soup, the woman immediately felt a stabbing pain in her throat.

The woman then tried to swallow more food in the hope that it would dislodge the fishbone, but it didn’t work.

She then used her finger to press on the affected area deep inside her mouth, but that, too, failed. Worse, it caused the fishbone to become lodged deeper in her flesh, resulting in inflammation.

The woman then went to a hospital, but the doctors were unable to detect the fishbone via X-rays and assumed that it had passed through her system.

However, her symptoms worsen over the next 2 weeks, with the woman beginning to show signs resembling thyroid inflammation.

She then went to the hospital again, but the doctors just sent her home with medication.

As the pain intensified, the woman applied a pain-relief patch to her neck, which provided slight temporary relief. However, she continued to feel a sharp, needle-like sensation.

She put on the pain-relief patch again the next day, and to her horror, the fishbone visibly emerged through the skin on her neck.

Seeing this, her husband rushed her to Bueng Sam Phan Hospital, where X-rays confirmed the presence of the fishbone.

The woman underwent emergency surgery, and thankfully, the fishbone, which was 2cm in length, was successfully removed. Doctors said that it was the first case of its kind they had encountered.

Suriyan shared the ordeal on social media as a cautionary tale, warning others,

“It’s something so simple, but it could have caused serious harm. We just want others to be more aware,”
