The sugar daddy dating website, Sugarbook, has been blocked in Malaysia as its “content violates the laws of the country”.

A visit to www.sugarbook.com shows that the site was found to be in violation of Section 263 (2) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

However, the Sugarbook app is still available for download on the Google Play Store.

Barely 24 hours after the website was banned, Sugarbook has been made accessible again after changing their website address to www.sucrebook.com. They even flashed this announcement on the Sugarbook app.

“Sugarbook is banned in Malaysia. Sucrebook.com is now the official website.”

Yesterday (15 February), the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) released a statement saying that they are working with the PDRM to monitor and investigate the Sugarbook application, and will take action against users and owners of the platform if they are found to have violated the laws of the country.

“If there are elements of prostitution, further actions will be taken by the PDRM,” it said.

“Parents and guardians are advised to constantly monitor their children’s online activities and to observe any lifestyle changes that may arouse suspicion.”

MCMC also warns users to be aware that using online dating services makes them vulnerable to the risks of cybercrime if they do not take cybersecurity and self-control measures.

“In this regard, MCMC would like to advise users of internet applications to always be careful in providing personal information when browsing social media or online applications, especially to connect with strangers on friend search sites.”
