Social media is so ubiquitous these days that it’s hard to imagine how our lives would be without the advent of social media platforms.

Not only are these platforms being used for entertainment and keeping connected with our friends and families, but they’re also important tools to know the latest news and for some, they are also used for their jobs and livelihoods.

With that in mind, did you know that Malaysia records one of the highest usage of social media in the world?

In fact, based on a recent study by global proxy service provider Proxyrack, our country is tied with the Philippines as the second social media capital of the world!

The study seeks to find the country with the most social media usage by looking at data from DataReportal on the average number of social media platforms and the percentage of the population that uses Facebook.

According to the study, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the social media capital of the world with a score of 9.55/10, which is higher than any other nation.

For illustration purposes

The UAE recorded an average of 8.2 social media platforms, which is the third highest in the world. Furthermore, the country also has 108% of its population using Facebook, which means that the country has more Facebook accounts registered than the number of citizens. Absurd!

As for Malaysia, we recorded an average of 7.7 social media platforms, with 83% of our population with a Facebook account.

That makes our score in the study to be 8.75/10, which is the same as the Philippines which has an average of 8.2 social media platforms and 78% of the population using Facebook.
