It was recently reported that a lawsuit has been filed by a student from Kota Belud against her former English teacher who allegedly skipped classes for seven months in 2018.

Siti Nafirah Siman had filed the suit against her former English teacher on October 30, 2018. The former student of SMK Taun Gusi, now 23, had named Mohd Jainal Jamrin (her former teacher), Suid Hanapi (in his capacity as principal of the SMK Taun Gusi), Kota Belud District Education Officer, Sabah Education Director, Director General of Education Malaysia, Minister of Education Malaysia and Government of Malaysia as the defendants.

The trial has been fixed for five days from May 15 until May 19 before judge Datuk Ismail Brahim.

Among others, she claimed that the teacher had failed to turn up in class to teach the subject for seven months in 2015.

The case has been left hanging since 2020 and multiple trial dates were fixed but later vacated, mostly due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The last hearing was in September 2022, but it was postponed after Siti Nafirah told the court that she wanted to change new solicitors to represent her in the hearing. Siti Nafirah is now represented by counsel Shireen Sikayun.

Meanwhile, three more former students – Rusiah Sabdarin Nur Natasha Allisya Hamali, and Calvina Angayung, now all aged 22, filed a similar suit in November 2020.

Their case had gone to trial and a decision is expected on July 18.
