A Singaporean man pleaded guilty on Thursday (10 June 2021) for sexually assaulting his female acquaintance at his home after playing the popular online mobile game, Mobile Legends together. As reported by Today Singapore, the man, 21-year-old Lim Jing Wei sexually assaulted the victim in his bedroom despite his mother being at the house throughout the whole incident.

Lim, who just turned 21 years old today, pleaded guilty to one charge of sexual assault by penetration and another charge of attempted rape will be taken into consideration for sentencing which is scheduled to commence next week. He is currently out on bail for SGD80,000 or approximately RM248,000.

It is heard in court that Lim met the victim, who is two years his senior in 2018 via mutual friends. Up until the incident, they had gone out together several times in a group of friends and once on their own. Lim was interested in her and had asked her out back in 2018 but stopped when she did not reciprocate the feelings.

On the day of the crime, the victim invited him to join her and her friend for drinks at her workplace. The group shared a beer tower and at around 11pm the friend departed the group and the both of them had supper together. Lim then invited the victim to his place to play Mobile Legends. The victim agreed as she wanted to charge her mobile phone at the same time.

At his home, Lim asked the victim to go straight to his bedroom while he spoke briefly with his mother in the living room. He then entered the bedroom, shut the door and they played Mobile Legends together.

However, Lim suddenly asked her to lie down next to him in bed but she declined. He then persisted and she gave in, hoping that he would stop asking her to do it.

He then lay on top of her, hugged and kissed her. She pushed him away and shouted ‘Aunty’, hoping that it would attract the attention of Lim’s mother to go into the room.

However, it did not work and Lim removed her long-sleeved top despite the victim refusing and saying no several times. She then complied with his requests believing that it would appease him.

When she did so, Lim sexually assaulted her. The victim was too shocked to react in time to stop him but soon told him to stop and shifted away. Lim complied but then asked her to perform a sex act on him which she declined and instead suggested that they cuddle in order to appease him.

He agreed and fell asleep about 15 minutes later. The victim then dressed herself and broke down, traumatised by the assault. She sent messages to several of her friends asked if they could pick her up. The victim then composed herself and searched for the keys to Lim’s flat.

She also found his wallet and took a photograph of his IC to pass to the police. One of her friends later picked her up and helped her make a police report.

Deputy Public Prosecutors Kenneth Kee and Henna Tjoa opposed the District Judge May Mesennas preliminary call for a report to assess if Lim is suitable for probation. However, the Public Prosecutors did agree to a suitability report for reformative training – a regimented rehabilitation programme for young offenders under 21 (Lim was under 21 when the crime happened) who commit serious crimes.

For his crimes, Lim will face punishment of imprisonment up to 20 years, and fined or caned. Let’s hope the victim would get the justice that she deserves and that Lim would be punished with the full force of the law for his crime!
