Last night, the official date for Hari Raya Aidilfitri in Malaysia was announced, confirming that the celebration will take place tomorrow (21 March).

With the festivities just around the corner, a well-known Malaysian celebrity chef took the opportunity to share a piece of advice with parents regarding a long-standing festive tradition.

Gratitude over compassion

Celebrity chef Dato’ Fazley Yaakob turned to the social media platform Threads to advise and remind parents to teach their children not to compare the amount of duit raya (festive money packets) they receive.

In his post, he pointed out how unhealthy it is to turn duit raya into a metric for measuring “which house is better” to visit during the Hari Raya celebrations.

“Just a reminder not to teach kids to compare how much duit raya they get from family or friends. That’s really unhealthy, especially when duit raya becomes a measure of ‘whose house is better for Raya,'” he wrote.

A lesson in being gracious

He added that it is far better to teach children to appreciate and accept whatever amount they receive with grace, especially if the sum is less than they had anticipated.

“Teach kids to appreciate whatever they receive, whether it’s RM1 or RM100,” he noted.

“Teach them to accept it graciously, and not to complain or criticise when they get less than they expected. If children do complain about receiving only a small amount, the responsibility still lies with the parents. Don’t take it personally, okay?”
