A dessert seller in Kepala Batas, Penang, had to defend her RM40 Tiramisu Crepe after customers complained it was too pricey for a single container.
“Is this the one that you guys said is expensive? I think when it comes to Tiramisu, you know that bakers will use marcarpone cheese.”
The dessert seller justified the price of her Tiramisu
According to House of Ingredients, mascarpone cheese typically costs around RM35 to RM50, depending on the brand. In her explanation video on Instagram @kiedacrepehouse, Kieda, the dessert seller, explained that she uses expensive ingredients for her Tiramisu crepe. She also revealed the brands used for the coffee and butter in making the dessert.
Other vendors might justify the expensive pricing and cite “premium ingredients”, but Kieda explained that the reason behind the pricey RM40 Tiramisu Crepe is also the manpower involved in crafting the dessert.
“It’s not just about the ingredients, it’s also about the manpower and the method of baking this dessert.”
Kieda also suggested her followers purchase the Tiramisu for the best satisfaction and said each Tiramisu comes with 4 Lady Fingers – the Italian meringue cookie in the dessert.
“It’s less sweet because I personally am not a big fan of sweet food.”
Kieda apologised to her followers who thought the dessert was too expensive for the portion, and said that,
“I’m using premium ingredients.”
Netizens respond
Social media users, however, still believed that Kieda’s Tiramisu Crepe was too expensive, and said they could get the same thing elsewhere at a cheaper price.
“Look at the texture, it looks hard, and the lady’s fingers are barely soaked in coffee. RM40 for that? It’s a simple dessert. Why would she sell it at that price?”
“Might as well get a Tiramisu at Coffee Bean, and with RM40, you could get yourself a cup of coffee too. You could chill and relax at the coffeehouse, and you don’t even need to queue.”
Another netizen responded sarcastically, saying that RM40 is too cheap if Kieda was using premium ingredients.
“You should’ve sold it at RM149.90 since you are using premium ingredients.”
