A man battling cancer has made the heartbreaking decision to discharge himself from the hospital against medical advice so he could continue working to support his family.

Despite his condition, he returned to selling bread, soy bean and tau fu fah from his truck, saying he couldn’t afford to stop working because “my children need me.”

Ah Chong later turned to Malaysian philanthropist Kuan Chee Heng, better known as Uncle Kentang, for help in finding out what stage his cancer is at.

“I told the doctor I needed to be discharged because my children need me. But I need to know what stage my cancer is. I need a computed tomography (CT) scan so I can prepare myself,” the man pleaded.

According to Uncle Kentang, Ah Chong was later told that he may have to wait several months for a CT scan at a government hospital.

“For now, a private hospital is our only option because the waiting time at the government hospital is very long. Every day, he lives with the fear of not knowing how advanced his cancer is. We’re trying to get him diagnosed as soon as possible because he has a wife with mental illness and a 13-year-old son, who also has a mental illness, both of whom depend heavily on him. He needs to know what stage his cancer is at so he can plan for his family’s future,” the post read.

Uncle Kentang calls on Malaysians to help

Uncle Kentang has since appealed to the public to help raise RM1,500 or more for Ah Chong’s CT scan, with hopes of bringing him to Columbia Hospital to have his lungs examined.

“He wakes up at 1:30am every day and drives his lorry to USJ, Subang Jaya to collect bread, soy bean and tau fu fah supplies. By 5:00 AM, he’s already at his selling spot. He sells at Menara TRX from 5 AM to 10 AM, then moves to Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya, where he continues selling until 5:00 PM. By the time he gets home, it’s usually after 7 PM.

“This is his daily routine despite having cancer. Even after being diagnosed, he went straight back to work,” Uncle Kentang said.

  • Reference: CT Scan

Alternatively, donations can also be sent via TNG, with the payment receipt forwarded to 018-268 3999.

“Many people walk away from their spouses and children when life becomes difficult. This man didn’t. Even while facing one of the toughest battles of his life, he continues fighting for his family every single day,” Uncle Kentang added.
