Nowadays, a lot of parents see children as a potential gold mine. If you treat kids like investments, don’t be surprised if they end up seeing you as a problem.

In a recent post by user @twtsecretsmy, a woman bravely shared her feelings about her parents relying on her for financial support.

In the anonymous tip, she opens up about facing tough situations before, but nothing compares to the heartbreak of realising her parents are working against her.

She shares how she’s been covering all the bills for her family, including her father’s, brother’s, and her own phone bills, Astro subscription, water expenses, and her study loans ever since she began working.

“90% of my salary goes straight to covering these expenses. The remaining 10% is what I have left for my personal needs, giving my parents a monthly allowance, and saving.”

She then goes on to explain that for the past 2 years, she hasn’t been able to save any money because her entire salary goes toward paying off loans, bills, and supporting her parents.

“Only a month ago, I bought my own second-hand car, and that too on monthly installments because I have no savings to purchase it outright. Additionally, I’m staying in a rented room near my workplace.”

Even though she mentioned that her father is still employed, he continues to ask her for money, which she gives him. She expressed uncertainty about what he does with his own earnings, given that he is still working.

Her father began asking for money more frequently after learning that she’s taken on part-time jobs.

The woman expressed sympathy for her father, which is why she continued to give him money. She explained that she felt grateful for all he had done to help her reach where she is today.

She continues mentioning that her mother never helped her with anything since she was a child. However, even if her mother did help her, she would still bring it up occasionally to guilt trip her.

The woman shared how just a few days ago, her father had asked to borrow a huge amount of money, promising to repay her the next morning.

“As usual, I would lend him the money, but a few days later when I tried to ask for it back, he would respond as if he wasn’t planning to return it anytime soon. Additionally, he even went so far as to ask her for more money right after that.”

When the woman refused to give her father the money, even after explaining that she had none left, he proceeded to ask her what she had done with the money all this time.

After the argument, she revealed that both her parents became upset to the point where her mother sent a voice message in the family group, urging her to consider all the times they had struggled and still managed to do their best to raise her.

“At this moment, I just feel like ending my life.”

The woman shared how there were time when she was left with only RM50 for nearly 2 weeks, yet she somehow managed to survive alone, sometimes going without food for a few days, just to ensure that she could prioritise her family.

“Today was the first time I asked him to pay back the money he owed me, solely because I’m trying to save up money to address my father’s dental issue and to buy him a new pair of shoes.”

She concluded the post with,

“To all the parents out there, please remember that your children are not your investment plan. No child was asked to be born, grow up, and end up being treated as if they owe their entire life to their parents. It’s your responsibility as parents to raise your kids, rather than treating them like a business investment.”
