It’s no secret that Malaysians have been somewhat insensitive towards the needs of disabled people, after all, there are still able-bodied Malaysians who park in OKU parking spots.

But, thankfully, Ras Adiba Radzi; the Dewan Negara senator appointed to represent persons with disabilities, has an idea to make our beautiful country just a little bit more disability-friendly.

As reported by Astro Awani, Ras Adiba has suggested introducing sign language as a third language, adding that this can facilitate communication between the disabled community and all sections of the Malaysian society.

“The approach is to have it implemented at the nursery (Taska), school and tertiary institution levels so that by the time they graduate, they will be able to communicate with this disabled group while at work,” she said.

Along with implementing sign language in schools, she is also hard at work seeking employment opportunities in all sectors and will be conducting special training programmes to help the disabled community enhance their employable skills.

Sign 2 1

On a separate note, she has also called for the local authorities to impose stricter enforcement on those who take advantage of the special privileges given to the disabled, such as using parking spaces dedicated to the disabled.

“It is important to be strict to raise awareness as many are still parking their vehicles at the designated lots meant for the disabled,” she added. Seriously, if you’re not disabled and are thinking of parking in an OKU parking spot, just don’t do it.
