There are so many Malaysians out there who are contributing to the country by breaking records and winning competitions.

Most recently, national para powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin has made the nation proud by breaking the world record in the men’s up to 72kg category at the Dubai 2023 World Para Powerlifting Championship in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on 24 August.

According to The Borneo Post, the 24-year-old powerlifter who weighs 71.2kg has lifted 231kg and broke his previous world record of 230kg that was set in 2021.

Prior to this, he won Malaysia’s first-ever gold medal in the men’s 72 kg powerlifting event during the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo and in the process, broke the Paralympics record. In the following year, he once again broke the Paralympics record with a 228kg lift during the 2021 Tokyo Paralympics Games.

His achievement is certainly not little as it shows how much dedication and commitment that he put into the sport. Recognising this, Sports and Youth Minister, Hannah Yeoh congratulated him in a Twitter post.
